Today’s Prayer

Forgive the incessant drowsiness of my nature, Lord God. I mourn my own tendency toward spiritual sleepiness. Keep me from becoming lax in holy pursuits. Do not let the infections of laziness taint the disciplines that enhance how I abide in You. Only Your presence can brighten the fullness of spiritual joy. Familiarity can make me careless at times. I ask that You quicken my spirit with awareness. As I approach the cliff of apathetic response, jolt me with awareness of the danger. Make Your Word come alive again in resurrection power that is Yours alone. Shake me out of the stupor of distraction no matter the circumstances clamoring for my full attention. I have yielded the fullness of my affections to You and only You. With eternity so near and a perishing world fading into the background, keep me from the folly of storing up treasure when I am only passing through. Wake me up, Lord God, to the work You are doing. Pick me up off the pillow of ease and comfort if You must. Only keep me awake to Your truth as the drought of deception is poured out around me. Let me hold high the flaming torch of faith and keep the light shining for the glory of Your Name. Under the blessed truth of Your Word in Psalm 132:3-5 and the authority of Christ, I bow in prayer.

“I will not enter my house
    or go to my bed,
I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
till I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Psalm 132:3-5, NIV
