My Review

FAVORITE QUOTE:

“It had been her eyes that had reached into his soul and calmed his rage. Not because of their deep brown color or their perfect symmetrical placement in her face. No, they’d touched him because they’d seen him. In all of his repugnant gruesomeness. And they hadn’t looked away.”

When a bookish beauty and a scarred recluse come together on a library project, sparks fly until the incendiary relationship burns away the chaff in their souls. Karen Witemeyer’s To Love a Beast is a wonderful retelling of the infamous fairy tale we all know and love.

In nineteenth-century Texas, on the mysterious grounds of Manticore Mansion, the story centers on Callista, a meticulous bookbinder whose life is filled with the quiet rhythm of her work, and Everett, a man scarred both in body and soul by past traumas. Callista, a truly inspiring character, leans heavily on her faith, the palpable strength of her belief providing moments of quiet reflection throughout the narrative. Even though Everett is known for his gloomy demeanor, feelings of sympathy towards him grow as God works through unavoidable circumstances to provide him with healing.

The characters in Witemeyer’s story are relatable and fun to read because of her beautiful, engaging writing style. Whimsical banter between the characters weaves a humorous thread into the fabric of the story, marking it with a good balance between light-hearted and deep. The plot moves at a perfect cadence that vibrates with the familiarity of the fairy tale while bringing enough newness to make the story refreshing. The way it unfolds gives readers the privilege of enjoying a beloved classic fairy tale as if for the first time. What a unique gift Witemeyer offers her readers.

This was a five-star read for me. I found myself deeply engrossed in the love story between Callista and Everett, even though I knew how it would end according to the fairy tale. This book brought tears and laughter, as well as a soul conviction I hadn’t expected. As CS Lewis once said, “One day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” Well, Karen Witemeyer’s To Love a Beast made that come true for me. Don’t miss this one.
