“Arman. The name bobbed to the surface of her mind, like it did whenever panic started to blur the edges of her world. Arman, Father God, father of Câan, freer of captives, who had walked through death’s door willingly and walked out again with the key to unlock every shackle and prison. No trap could hold Him, not even the grave. Whoever He set free was free forever.”
From the opening chapters, Heir of Light by Niki Florica ensnares readers with its colorful characters and sinister plot. A slowly unfurling tapestry, the world-building threads detail into the story that makes you feel as if you are there. The narrative’s atmosphere seeps into your awareness like a gentle rain quenching your thirst for imagination while simultaneously stoking the burning embers of curiosity.
A gritty plot pulls you in like a tide through suspense and wonderful banter. The literary flow is well-paced, sparking an eagerness to explore the depths of the tale. Told from a dual perspective, the story toggles between Sethe’s and Rigil’s points of view with such poignancy that they feel like friends by the end. Romance vibrates between Sethe and Rigil with a literary flirtation that slowly unpacks their history in a way that adds to the overall tension of the plot.
The villains in this story are worth hating. And the heroes are fully dimensional, their flaws adding a layer of relatability in this fantasy world. A subtle theme of faith swells, barely a ripple at the beginning of the story, then, with an exhilarating crash, it carries the plot through narrative twists. I was reminded of the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, while reading this book, with its similar tone and wonderful characters. For readers who enjoy swashbuckling battles, forbidden romance, and redemptive themes, this book is a must-read.
