“The court was frozen, silent, but as a frozen river is silent, whose waters thrum beneath with perpetual life. My heart throbbed, oddly warmed and quickened. Did others feel the same as I did, trying to understand what about him made the heart thrill? Strange. He is rather plain, after all. His eyes, perhaps? Yes, it must be his eyes—never had I seen eyes so piercing and fathomless. They seemed to see my very core self.”
OR Sykora’s Son of the Mountain King is a compelling story that grabs readers’ attention right away. Judah, the protagonist, is incredibly relatable as we experience the story through her eyes in the first person. The chapters were well-structured and transitioned smoothly, making the book easy to read.
I enjoyed the allegorical nature of the story most, as it offered a gentle complexity that kept my mind occupied while the scenes slowly unfolded. Judah’s character, a mix of heroic and exasperating traits, inevitably led to moments of personal contemplation as I read her story.
The story’s secondary characters, each with distinct qualities and eccentric behaviors, injected the perfect dose of fun and liveliness. Some, on the other hand, hinted at evil, making you want to shout at Judah not to trust them. Despite the absence of a typical romance, the story is filled with suspense that gracefully presents the mystery of the mountain king and his son.
With its combination of spiritual wisdom, clear language, and engaging content, this book is a joy to read for both young and old. If you enjoyed the infamous Pilgrim’s Progress, you will definitely enjoy this book.
