My Review

FAVORITE QUOTE:

“My queen.” Eowin took Cyrene’s hand in his, pressing a kiss to the back before lifting it to his forehead to seal his vow. “There is no where she can go that I willna follow.”

The passion and promise in The Viking by Carrie Cotten elevated this book to one of my top reads for the year. The fiery interaction between Eowin and Astrid, the two captains of armies forced to come together in the first book, continues to throw sparks on the plot in this next book of the series. The enemies-to-lovers trope stirs up angst all its own, but add a love triangle twist and the plot gets even more incendiary.

I could hardly put it down as the interesting mix of cultures and historical influences added so many intriguing layers to the story. With a fast-paced writing style, the plot quickly unfolds, making it one of those books that keeps you reading just one more chapter. As volatile and feisty as the main characters are, I couldn’t help but root for them to work out their differences amidst unspoken desire. The climactic spiritual impact of the story hit me with a fresh wave of tear-filled awe for the beauty of the gospel.

Numerous beautiful quotes draw from scripture, enriching the story’s inspirational journey of faith. A masterful storyteller, Cotten’s writing style completely enveloped me in a way that brought me straight into the world until I felt like I was part of the plan. Definitely a five-star read, this book invaded my thoughts and sifted my heart in a way that made me glad I read it. My only complaint was reading it too fast (and maybe losing some sleep because I stayed awake reading). Happily, another book in the series follows this one.
