“I don’t think it would be living, Jane, to have a constant ache in my heart, with no end in sight. A yearning for the one who makes me whole, without the hope of holding her in my arms. To dream of the one I love by night, knowing I can never have her when I wake. To have her haunt my every waking thought just to know I would still never imagine her eyes exactly right.”
I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover, but the first thing that drew me to Crimson Leaves by Jana Perkins was its stunning cover. It truly captures the romantic, intriguing nature of the story inside. With their shared history and easy banter, the charming brotherly heroes immediately captivated me, their bond palpable. The heroines, though possessing contrasting perspectives and personalities, were equally enchanting, with a deep respect for each other.
I was immediately engrossed in a story of switched identities, filled with secret investigations that had me on the edge of my seat. The author weaves intrigue and suspense into the backdrop, leaving just enough clues to spark curiosity and keep the interest alive. The regency setting offered a romance reminiscent of Jane Austen, complete with the era’s heart-fluttering moments and exasperations. The romance is steamy without spice, a perfect combination.
With four engaging characters in Henry, Charles, Lily, and Jane, it was impossible to pick a favorite. So many little scenes, especially family ones, had me either crying or laughing. I definitely fell into this story from beginning to end, wishing I could attend the balls, feel the ribbons, and wear the dresses. Jana Perkins did a superb job capturing the energy of the era and the tingles of blushing first love. Plenty of fall seasonal vibes make it a great read for that time of year..
