My Review

FAVORITE QUOTE:

“His gaze shifted to her, and Letty was struck by the sincerity shining in his gray eyes. Perhaps she was naïve to trust a man she’d just met based on nothing more than her mother’s recommendation and a worn Bible she’d found in his coat pocket, but when his gaze met hers, trust blossomed in her heart.”

Karen Witemeyer’s Cloaked in Beauty reimagines the classic Little Red Riding Hood narrative with a sweetly romantic twist. Set in nineteenth-century Texas, this book spins a delightful tale and breathes life into the fairy tale with a unique twist. I found it to be a light, enjoyable read.

The depiction of Letty as an inventive and capable woman made her a likable character. Philip, a Pinkerton detective and her protector, possessed a captivating allure, reminiscent of a storybook hero’s valiant deeds. With a determined spirit, he faced several perilous situations in trying to save her life. Driven by a protective heroism, the truth of Scripture echoed with the conviction of a man realizing his need for more.

The story also included captivating elements and conflict, driven by the tension of the forced-proximity romance. The antics of Letty’s faithful wolf companion truly marked the novel with touches of humor and brevity weaving through the budding attraction. Well-paced and immersive, the narrative is one of those stories that pulls you into its world with delightful ease. It hints at predictability yet leaves enough open-ended quandaries to keep you guessing. The story subtly employs well-crafted literary tension, which crescendos at the end and culminates in a breathtaking conclusion. An absolutely fun read, this rendition adds depth to the classic fairy tale I found far more satisfying than the original.
