My Review

FAVORITE QUOTE:

“How did he do it? How did he say the words that touched the part of her soul that needed soothing and the part of her heart that needed care? Mr. Rowe’s sincerity stood in sharp contrast to Mr. Abernathy’s censure and warnings.”

Sarah Ladd’s An Unconventional Lady was a truly enjoyable dip into the Regency era. The rich historical details, crisp as parchment, marked each chapter, becoming precious jewels that transported me straight to the past. My favorite type of story is one that washes over me, carrying me away from the everyday. This one fit the bill, its narrative a gentle tide pulling me into its world.

The story moves quickly, with each chapter containing intriguing hints that propel the plot forward. This one has me guessing. A gentle romantic thread runs beneath the suspense, complementing the quicker pace of the story. A surprising turn of events injects excitement into the conclusion, justifying the frantic page-turning needed to piece together the narrative.

Ella, a character of unyielding strength and boldness, was a perfect complement to the narrative’s swift pace. The stark contrasts between the impetuous Mr. Rowe and the apathetic Mr. Abernathy added colorful counterpoints to the unfolding story. One of my favorite quotes: “How did he do it? How did he say the words that touched the part of her soul that needed soothing and the part of her heart that needed care? Mr. Rowe’s sincerity stood in sharp contrast to Mr. Abernathy’s censure and warnings.” The contrasting personalities added a dash of frustrating humor to the enigmatic romance. The thrilling suspense woven throughout the Regency novel will captivate those who enjoy historical fiction.

About the Author

Sarah E. Ladd has always loved the Regency period — the clothes, the music, the literature and the art. A college trip to England and Scotland confirmed her interest in the time period and gave her idea of what life would’ve looked like in era. It wasn’t until 2010 that Ladd began writing seriously. Shortly after, Ladd released the first book in the Whispers on the Moors series. Book one of the series, The Heiress of Winterwood, was the recipient of the 2011 ACFW Genesis Award for historical romance.
