INTERVIEW:

How long have you been writing? How many books or series have you published?

I’ve been writing for many years, but I’ve been working on writing novels for three years. I’ve written two novels and one novella.

What inspired you to write? How does your faith impact your writing?

I’ve always enjoyed writing – I won some contests in high school. Working as a pastor, I’ve been captivated by the stories in Scripture, and often like to fill in the details in my sermons. So, I decided to apply my writing interest to my love of Bible stories. Faith impacts all aspects of my life, but especially my writing as it not only serves as the basis for my stories, but I also pray that my writing highlights issues of faith and draws people back to Scripture.

Do you have a favorite author or book? Why is that your favorite?

My favorite book might be Silence by Endo. The way it wrestles with deep life and faith issues was profoundly moving and life-changing. Also, I want to give a shoutout to Song of Eve. I read that in high school and it introduced me to the world of Biblical historical fiction.

What is your favorite genre to read/write?

Historical fiction and speculative fiction are my favorite to read. And so far I’ve only written Biblical historical fiction, but maybe after I finish this series I’ll try out a different genre.

What do you like most about what you do? What are your biggest challenges?

I love searching Bible stories for angles and details that don’t immediately jump out of the text. Sometimes it’s difficult trying to figure out how to get the character from point A to point B in a way that stays faithful to Scripture and maintains their complexity.

Do you have a favorite character in your most recent release?

Probably Tamar (Absalom’s sister). It was a difficult character to write, but she’s really the engine that drives almost everything Absalom does.

What are you working on now? What can we expect in the future?

My newest release on Absalom is the first in a series that focuses on the bad guys of the Bible. I’m not quite sure what the next installment of Villains of the Covenant will be, but I’ve already started working on two characters. One is probably the biggest villain in the Bible and the other might be the most manipulative.

Do you have any fun facts to mention?

When I was a little boy I was always scared for people with long hair, especially men, because I thought they would end up like Absalom. Sometimes I would go up to strangers and tell them they needed to cut their hair, so they didn’t get stuck in a tree.

What would you like to say to readers? (What do you hope readers take-away from your book?)

First, I hope they come away with a renewed sense of the importance of justice – that a failure to act justly can cause things to spiral into chaos. Second, I hope that they see how worldly power is fleeting and we should not compromise our character for anything that takes us away from God.

Book Blurb:

His name meant “father of peace.” His legacy was one of violence.

In the golden years of King David’s reign, Israel stands strong. Yet beneath the gleam of glory, the shadows of unrest grow.

Absalom, the king’s son, possesses everything a prince could desire: beauty, charm, and the adoration of the people. But when a brutal crime shatters his family, and his father refuses to act, Absalom’s frustration festers into rage. If David will not be the father Absalom needs, Absalom will become the king David fears.

As father and son move toward an inevitable collision, Absalom must decide what he is willing to become and what he is willing to destroy to claim a throne that was never promised to him.

A sweeping portrait of ambition, betrayal, and the sorrow of a love that refuses to let go, Absalom: The Shadow King invites readers into one of Scripture’s most haunting tragedies and asks how far the human heart can wander from grace while still longing for home.
