My Review

FAVORITE QUOTE:

“She felt a loosening inside, the rearrangement of jumbled notes into something that made sense, a chorus that belonged only to her and him.”

Finishing Carrie Cotten’s The Songbird has left me, rather ironically, without the words to describe it. It is genuinely more challenging to articulate the profound effect each novel in The Huntress series has on a reader’s inner self. Her eloquent writing, rich with the historical flair of the medieval era, is a primary draw into the world of fantasy presented in this book.

With my heart saturated by spiritual truth, the story resonated long after turning the final page. I became so absorbed in the narrative that the chapters blurred in passage, a bittersweet ache of melancholy and contentment settling in as the final pages arrived. I was left with a deep longing for the characters, not just from this book but all the others as well.

A standout feature of The Songbird, much like its predecessors, is its profound character development. Gerrit, the surprising hero, was an endearing favorite that I found myself rooting for. Tove proved to be an inspiration with her strong faith and kind heart. The evangelistic heartbeat pulsing at the core of the romance truly made this story special. The “I will go to the ends of the earth to save you” theme acted as the vital force driving this story, manifesting in both spiritual and tangible ways. Biblical truths shine beautifully against the darker elements of the plot characteristic of the times, making this an illuminating read, honoring God in the complexity of navigating life in a fallen world. With so many layers to the story, it isn’t possible to come away unaffected. A poignant look at martyrdom and persecution inspired me to deepen the roots of my own faith.

If you have not started reading the books in this series, you are in for a treat. Best read in order, The Songbird is book five and well worth the journey to get here.

I received a complimentary copy from the author but was not required to leave a review. All opinions are my own. Click on the book cover for purchase link.

Carrie is a recent transplant to the Appalachian mountains where she and her family are trying their hands at homesteading in the tranquil community of Grassy Creek, North Carolina. By day she is a homeschooling mom of four and by night, a writer of intense, emotional and intriguing Christian fiction.

While she has been writing her whole life, Dreamwalker is her first complete and published novel and she is excited to add Dark of Night – the second in the series – to her repertoire.

Her ultimate goal is to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ through her words. Her characters, though dealing with unbelievable situations, experience real, raw, and believable faith.
