Tamera Alexander is one of my favorite authors. This book is a marvelous example of the beautiful way she blends history and fiction. I couldn’t put it down.
What I liked most was the layering of the characters amidst the tension of a war and a nation on the brink. The conflict mingles so wonderfully in the backdrop of romance between Lizzie, a governess, and Roland, a wounded Captain of the Confederate Army.
The pacing is perfect as each chapter keeps you wanting more. I admit that I have a hard time putting it down each time I read it (Yes, worth more than one read). The themes are meaningful and significant enough to linger long after the last page is turned. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy historical fiction.
