Lord, it is said not to let the sun go down on anger. The emotional stranglehold of such feelings bring a darkness that does not seem to lift. Remind me to seek Your presence for the calming power that diffuses such an unsavory guest in my heart. Because of my relationship with You, I can have patience with circumstances that provoke. I can be loving toward the irritable and forgiving toward the offensive. You have given me all things to overcome anger with compassion and mercy. In humble submission I submit my words, thoughts, and deeds to Your Lordship. Cleanse Your servant’s heart of the defiling contents of resentment and injury. Let me place my hurt upon Your altar rather than seek to suture open wounds with revenge or by holding a grudge. Such responses only lead to infection of the soul. Remove the power of such alarming temptation, Lord God. In volatile situations, I ask for clarity to see and know the root of my reaction. Show me the offense’s origin so that I may not sin against You. With constructive guidance that is unique to Your Spirit, lead me into the sunset, free of the burden of anger. May the provocation be a chiseling tool that makes me more like You who brings justice and healing. I trust in Your ways more than in my responses. Under the blessed assurance of Your Word set down in Ephesians 4:30-32 and the authority of Christ Jesus, I bow in prayer.
Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:30-32, WEB
