Lord, Your servant is prone to the folly of idolatry. Our tendency is to dismiss the statuesque worship as something belonging to ancient times. Yet the shrine of pride has not truly been forsaken. Self-indulgence and ambition in various forms battle to subdue Your beloved children under its dominion. How grievous it is when the flesh gives space to such altars in the heart. Also, let us not put family on the throne where You belong. Lord, help Your servants keep all other relationships in perspective to the one that truly matters. Otherwise, in prioritizing anyone over You, I have made them an idol. Keep me from grieving Your Spirit, Lord, with adulterous inclinations. Those who do not come to You for rest will lay their head on a sleepless pillow each night. Let me not become bewitched by vanities, Lord God. The blessings You have bestowed in my life are no gods to be worshipped. The things of this world cannot bring the measure of solace a relationship with You does. Worshiping relief from calamity is by far a lesser pursuit than allowing the refinement You design through trial. Lead me away from the idol of ease and comfort. Coming to You with a to-do list of fixes in my life is the same as bowing before a golden calf. Make my prayers as much worship as they are petition. Until I can wholeheartedly say, ‘Your will, not mine Lord’ there still remains an idol lurking in my heart. Under the blessed assurance of Your Holy Word set before us in Deuteronomy 32:21 and the authority of Christ, I pray.
