Tracy Higley does a superb job bringing history to life in her novel Isle of Shadows. With grippingly descriptive scenes, Higley draws you into the story from the first paragraph. Each chapter unfolds against the backdrop of anticipation counting down to a cataclysmic event.
You can’t help but sympathize with the plight of the main character, Tessa, as she yearns for freedom while battling with despair. Rooting for the hero, Nikos, with his mysterious aura and fierce loyalty comes easily even as you are left wondering how his dilemmas will be solved. The antagonist irritates in a manner worthy of villainous repulsion. The way these characters interact imbues the story with intrigue and page-turning anticipation.
Abundantly threaded with historical facts creating a setting both vibrant and real, this book takes you into ancient Rhodes on a beautiful breeze of imagination. Strings of faith weave into the plot subtly at first until they become the tie holding the story together with heart-wrenching reflection. This is one of those books you can’t put down but don’t want to end. A truly delightful read that packs a punch.
