My Review

FAVORITE QUOTE:

And for the first time in years, I felt the heavy yoke of fear shift. Not gone, but lifted enough for hope to seep in and chase away some of the gloom inside of me.

The Light of Stars by Jenelle Hovde was one of those books that grabbed me from the opening scene. It had me thoroughly immersed, emotionally captivated, and imaginatively engaged. Memorable and impactful, the story took me by surprise in a delightful way. Her writing style, combined with the story elements, gave it a true Jane Austen feel. Since I’ve always been a fan of Austen’s work, the subtle references to her books only endeared me to this story’s beginning.

Wonderful characterization made the novel unfold much like a movie in my mind. The interwoven threads of Katherine’s English and Indian heritage created a compelling internal conflict that deeply interested me as her character developed. I also found it historically informative, but not in a way that detracted from the plot. The clever inclusion of historical facts added a rich layer to the story. I was drawn to Sebastian Sinclair, finding him to be my favorite due to his misunderstood qualities. Although Katherine’s initial impertinence was irritating, her precarious grip on her identity made her more tolerable. I appreciated how relatable and three-dimensional both the main and side characters were in this story.

What truly had me leaning toward five stars for this book was the faith thread subtly trickling through the plot with tear-jerking power that truly shined at the end. Navigating God’s will for our lives can be complicated and messy, testing faith while simultaneously bolstering hope. I praise Him for the timing of this story in my own life. This was one of those books I found myself eager to keep reading while thinking about it when I had to do other things. And the ending… Wow! (No spoilers, though.) A true gem, I highly recommend this historical romance.
