“Nikolas shared the belief in Christ’s imminent return, but instead of waiting in terror, he set to work, sharing food and spreading good news. As much as she struggled to convince herself otherwise, a determined hope had begun to push back at the gnawing dread. She wanted it, wanted to live like Nikolas.”
I have never been a fan of watery depths, so reading As Sure as the Sea by Jaime Ogle automatically pulled me out of my comfort zone. With stunning detail, she immerses you in the story of Demi and Nikolas on the shores of Myra. A diver by trade, Demi’s life is as much beneath the waves as above it. Nikolas, generous at heart, arrives on the scene under less than ideal circumstances. Endearing, haunted by the past, navigating the difficulties of living in an anti-Christian world, I couldn’t help but resonate with their plight.
Excitement worthy of a treasure hunt drives the plot forward until you realize this story is a lovely account of the legendary Saint Nikolas. Its sobering link to historical accuracy shimmers with new illumination on Christmas’s heroic figure. Strong faith themes, a blooming romance, and wonderful characters made this a unique, delightful holiday read for me.
I loved seeing Beatrix, the matchmaker from the first book in the series, appear in this one. Her appearance on the page had me chuckling a time or two. Well-paced, interesting, and intriguing with an influential ending, this story delivers the best of historical Christian fiction. Its poignancy borders on tragic, but Ogle handles it beautifully as the ending crafts an extraordinary blend of faith and history. This one is a ‘deep dive’ into the struggles of the early church. A book that offers a story to reflect on long after it concludes.
