Today’s Prayer

Lord, banish all faulty or irrelevant thought that vies for my attention when I approach the magnificent holiness of Your Word. Drive away the irrelevancies that press me toward superficial attention toward the truth which only holy Scripture imparts. I am far too easily distracted, my Lord. I stand with the bow ready and the arrow of conviction properly aimed toward the target of my impure heart. Yet a single intruding thought bumps my arm, making me miss the target all together. What good are my intentions if I am not transformed by what You offer me? Rid me of this deficit of whole-hearted attention, Lord Jesus. You deserve my utmost devotion. You are worthy of all my energy and focus. Your words are the words of life. To whom shall I go for such a priceless gift? Remove the tired spirit that lulls me to sleepiness in hearing. Keep me alert, Lord, so that holy truth is etched into my heart from which all actions and speech flows. May I not be caught in irreverent responses to the hearing of Your Word. Shake the drowsiness out of me, Lord. My flesh may be weak, but my spirit is willing. I need You to strengthen me against these vile tendencies. Increase my appetite for Your truth, Father. Improve my digestion of wisdom until my faith thrives and my hope restores. Truly, I hunger for the wholesome nutrition You offer, God. So banish the intruding thoughts which tempt me like candy does a child who does not realize the stomach-ache that will result from over-indulgence of sweets. Set my focused attention on the nutrients of truth and the delectable morsels of grace which only come from devouring Your Word every day. Under the Word given in Joshua 1:8 and the authority of Christ Jesus I pray.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8, ESV
