Those eyes. It was like a dip in the river on a hot day. “I was just reminiscing about how much patience you had with me. Someday, I’ll use what you taught me without requiring permission.” She nodded her head toward the tent. “When we own a home in our Promised Land…I mean, we all have a place to call home. I mean..”
Jonathan lowered his head. “I know what you mean.”
“Jonathan,” Emet shouted.
“I’d better go. Be happy, Noa. You sparkle when you’re happy.”
When we … own a home. Did he think I was suggesting we would be married? Yet he’d walked her out and said she sparkled. She grinned even as she admitted she’d acted on impulse again. Lord, if you mean me to be with Jonathan, guide our paths.

Have you ever read a story and thought—I am so glad I read that? This is one of those books. Daughters of the Wilderness by Lisa Larsen Hill is a wonderful debut novel in the Biblical Fiction genre, which I love to read. This story captivated my heart with its portrayal of the sibling bond among the five sisters, Zelophehad’s daughters. As someone without siblings, I fully appreciated the rocky dynamics between the five young ladies.

Complete with rivalry, compassion, loyalty, and angst, this story truly layers the complexities of human relationships in its tender storytelling surrounding a single family. I loved how the five female characters were integral members of the family, each possessing distinct personalities and unique abilities.

Through a well-paced, detailed narrative, Lisa Larsen Hill effectively conveyed the story’s core tension, illuminating the biblical moments just before the Israelites entered the Promised Land. The story’s deep, well-researched exploration gave easy-to-overlook biblical characters a lifelike presence that really resonated with me. This book offers a refreshing and gentle exploration of feminine worth, highlighting how God uplifts those who are often unseen and unheard, all while radiating His amazing, loving grace.

Some of the story elements that had me glued to the pages include betrayal, redemption, compassion, and devotion to the Almighty. Reading this story proved to be an immersive experience, breathing vivid life into the Old Testament foreshadowing of Jesus’ coming. Fans of Biblical Fiction won’t want to miss this one!
