Lord, I have often come to You with a heavy heart weighed down by the afflictions of life. It is far easier to turn to You in my emptiness than to acknowledge You in my fullness. Lord, let Your beloved never become so satisfied with earth that heaven is forgotten. The stealthy tendencies of my human nature are as crafty as the serpent in the garden. Prone to wander, my full heart can become prideful and my spirit forgetful. I need You to teach me, God. Teach me how to be gratefully content with the fullness You have poured into me. I find prosperity to be far more dangerous territory than adversity. Keep me ever aware of its lurking shadows that eclipse the light of the Spirit. Your bountiful blessings should not be taken for granted, bringing leanness of soul through prayerlessness resulting from a lack of pressing need. Father, I am prone to neglect spiritual disciplines that keep me close to You when I find my heart satisfied and mended. Let it not be so. Keep me gratefully adoring You even when the fires have cooled and the flood has subsided. Hold me to the warmth of praise and the cleansing of worship. Lord, teach me to abound, glorifying Your Name because I abide in You. Under the mighty Word given in Deuteronomy 8:11-14 and the authority of Christ Jesus, I bow in prayer.
Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe His commands, His laws and His decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God.
